The Highest Power of an Unknown Quantity

What makes a genius? The ability to see. To see what? The butterfly in a caterpillar, the eagle in an egg, the saint in a selfish person, life in death, unity in separation, God in the human and human in God, and suffering as the form in which the incomprehensibility of God himself appears.       ~ Brennan Manning

I know many exceptionally intelligent people. People who are bright and brilliant and understand things like quadratic equations: an equation in which the highest power of an unknown quantity is a squared. I know people with almost as many initials behind their names as the letters required to spell the name itself.

I know all these wonderfully smart people. But only a few times in my life have I met a genius. They’re the people I want to hang out with. They’re the ones I want to be like. To them, the Highest Power is a known quantity.

They’re people who know what to look for. They’re the ones who see the saint in the sinner, instead of the sinner in the saint.

  1. Beautiful Debbie! That’s what I miss in being able to be with you. Sure we can talk on the phone and that is wonderful but to have a person along side you who sees things with the eyes of God is indescribable. Thanks for the writing it brought me back to a piece of myself that I enjoy.

    1. Cathy – miss you, too, my friend. My eyes seem to work a lot better on some days than others. Thank you for being so generous in remembering the days when I knew what to look for! 🙂

  2. Thanks for introducing me to Brennan Manning. I had never heard of him and I read a lot. His is the faith for which I pray. And thanks again for your blog. Keep the good work up.

    1. literary lew – How fun to have had the privilege of introducing you to Brennan. I started with Ragamuffin Gospel and have read most all of his work. I’m so drawn to his vulnerability and to his humble heart. Thanks for reading and for your kind words!
