A Sunday Song – If I Stand

If I Stand

There’s more that rises in the morning
Than the sun
And more that shines in the night
Than just the moon
It’s more than just this fire here
That keeps me warm
In a shelter that is larger
Than this room

And there’s a loyalty that’s deeper
Than mere sentiments
And a music higher than the songs
That I can sing
The stuff of Earth competes
For the allegiance
I owe only to the Giver
Of all good things

So if I stand let me stand on the promise
That you will pull me through
And if I can’t let me fall on the grace
That first brought me to You
And if I sing let me sing for the joy
That has born in me these songs
And if I weep let it be as a man
Who is longing for his home

There’s more that dances on the prairies
Than the wind
More that pulses in the ocean
Than the tide
There’s a love that is fiercer
Than the love between friends
More gentle than a mother’s
When her baby’s at her side

And there’s a loyalty that’s deeper
Than mere sentiments
And a music higher than the songs
That I can sing
The stuff of Earth competes
For the allegiance
I owe only to the Giver
Of all good things

So if I stand let me stand on the promise
That you will pull me through
And if I can’t let me fall on the grace
That first brought me to You
And if I sing let me sing for the joy
That has born in me these songs
And if I weep let it be as a man
Who is longing for his home

And if I stand let me stand on the promise
That you will pull me through
And if I can’t let me fall on the grace
That first brought me to You
And if I sing let me sing for the joy
That has born in me these songs
And if I weep let it be as a man
Who is longing for his home

And if I weep let it be as a man
Who is longing for his home

I love this song because it’s so full of reminders for me. It reminds me that before I take a stand, I need to be certain of what I’m standing on. When I lose my balance, and I do, it reminds be that grace, not condemnation encompasses me. When I praise, I’m reminded of the Giver of all good things.

I especially love the last part. Weeping is a part of this journey and it is quite a journey. There will be many rough nights. The bed will never be perfect, always a bit too hard or a bit too soft, because I’m just a traveler, passing through on my way home.

Traveling mercies to you, my fellow sojourners.

  1. Beautiful song, brought to my attention by a beautiful in spirit friend. Travel mercies, you’ll be far in time/space but close in thoughts/spirit.

  2. We are traveling again and last nights bed was hard. We’ll have this the next 3 nights. Thanks for this rightful reminder of the hard things and that grace is always there.

    1. Debby – reminds of that old gospel song, This world is not my home, I’m only passing through… Do you know that one?
Looking forward to returning to livingingraceland soon!
